Why here?
In 2007, Kenya went through some dark days. Violence erupted across the nation in response to the election process of nations top position in the government. The violence was fueled by tribalism and a lack of faith in the integrity of the electoral process.
The toll of violence came to over 1,000 lives lost and close to a half million people who were left as refugees in their own country.
This is where Pastor Simon and his wife Margaret come into the picture. All of these people had to go somewhere. Some managed to successfully transition into a new life but others were left homeless with no way of moving forward. Most of these people ended up in Internally Displaced Peoples Camps (IDP Camps). One of these IDP camps was set up just down the mountain from where Simon and Margaret lived. They began to visit the camp regularly in an effort to show the love of Christ to this new community coming to their doorstep by way of tragedy and loss. They helped to plant and equip a church in the camp. They sowed their time, energy and finances into ministering to the community. And in the process, they began to care for a group of children who had lost their parents along the tragic journey. This was the start of some big dreams that would unfold over the next few years.
With lots of prayers and this group of children in mind, the plans for a children’s home began to come to fruition. With the help and support of people all over the world, a large plot of land was purchased and a building began to take shape. And after years of taking food and the hope of a brighter future to that group of kids, Abba’s House opened its doors to become their home in January or 2013.
Since opening, Abba’s House has continually been growing both in the number of children and in the ways it serves as a ministry and blessing to the community. What began as home with a garden has turned into so much more.
The home has continually been updated and added onto as the needs demand including the construction of dorms for the older kids and a large cafeteria for dining and church services. The garden has grown into a working farm, Abba’s Acres, with a variety of crops, animals and laborers to keep everything in working order.
A guest house has been built to facilitate visitors from all over the world. Abba’s Academy is a fully registered primary school for the kids to attend that has been opened to the children in the community to get a good quality education.
On top or all of this, there have been countless infrastructure improvements made to the home like getting electricity to the property and the digging of a much needed well.
Today, close to 40 children call Abba’s House their home. We are not an orphanage. We are a home and family.
There is not a path to adoption or families around the world seeking to have these kids come to their family. They are home at Abba’s House and treated as sons and daughters, both to the family and to the Lord. This means that each child has a sense of security and normalcy and doesn’t have to worry about where the next stop along an already hard road is. It means each child can rest easy knowing that the school fees will be covered this semester.
It means that instead of worrying about where their next meal is coming from, they can worry about what color bow to put in their hair in the morning. All of this takes a lot of support, a lot of work and a whole lot of trust in Jesus to provide on a daily basis.
Abba’s House has fresh water available to the community at little or no charge to those in need. There is a working farm that provides vegetables, meat and milk for the children and to community while employing locals desperately in need of a job.
